An elegant ambience has been achieved in the renovation of the popular Brisbane southside Easts Leagues Club. Easts’ have worked with Brand + Slater Architects for some eight years, and the 2016 renovation was stimulated by an expansion of the gaming and dining areas of the club, but also the refurbishment of an existing repertoire of dining, live music auditorium, and functions.
Brand + Slater director Luis Nheu said that the subtle elegance that informed the design approach to this project reflected the changing perception of the Club, with the redesign to achieve an atmospheric transformation to reflect that of a luxury hotel. The right lighting solution was a key component in achieving this ambience as was a refined design and premium finishes.
Lighting in the lounge area incorporates a ceiling treatment with a series of circular and curved coffered sections that sweep around clusters of delicate, golden orb pendants. The soft light of the concealed coffer lighting, paired with the glistening pendants, makes for the soft ambience. The existing bar was refaced, using a tile in burnt umber, while mirror and gold-coloured tiles were used to the back bar.
The new gaming room is credited with being, “the brightest gaming room in Queensland”. A contemporary interpretation of the crystal chandelier is its central feature, with glamour in its sheer extravagance. Custom made to suit the room, it includes 14,000 strands of crystal and hand-blown mirrored glass.
A custom designed carpet features a stylized floral motif in earth tones and is used throughout to unite different zones. Soft furnishings are in tones of brown, cream, and smoky grey, with a splash of burgundy enlivening the spaces.
With this refurbishment creating five-star luxury, Easts have increased the potential of discrete areas, with a dual use overflow from the dining room also able to be used as a function area. Clubs increasingly compete with casinos for visitors, and this significant refurbishment puts Easts on a par with other luxury venues.
