Chairs Chairs Everywhere ...... The Italian Way of Seating – 50 years of Italian Chairs comes to HHD2011

The perfect combination of form and function is the ideal of designers everywhere. Nowhere is this more evident in The Italian Way of Seating exhibition at Hotel Hospitality + Design 2011, 14-16 March at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The exhibition of Italian chair design and manufacture across the second half of the 20th century showcases the most innovative and iconic examples of the humble chair, long considered the pinnacle of product design.

Post-war optimism from Le Corbusier rubs shoulders with the whimsy and global design domination of Marc Newson and Philippe Stack in the 90s and beyond into the early years for the new millennium.

The exhibition reveals the diverse and unique collection of pieces through which audiences gain an insight into the strategic interplay between form and function.

"Our collaboration with HHD is a perfect fit", said Claudio Pasqualucci the Italian Trade Commissioner. "These chairs are iconic pieces and most are still in production, many with Australian distribution. This was an opportunity to spread the message about high quality Italian design to a discerning audience, in a forum where function and design are paramount".

Curator Alessandro Mendini presents the chairs as small pieces of "architecture‟ whose design has tested the mettle of famous artists, great architects and renowned designers. The featured designers have successfully married creativity and functional requirements while addressing the practical manufacturing concerns.
