Landmark Kings Cross hotel reopens

The stunning views of Sydney's The Crest hotel are again being enjoyed by guests with the landmark hotel's reopening this week.

Rebadged as the Mercure Sydney Potts Point, the Australand-owned hotel being managed by Accor will return 227 rooms to Sydney's tight room supply.

Closed for almost two years, the hotel has been recently upgraded with a $30m refurbishment, with new furniture and fittings and a funky, modern design by Marques Interiors.

As The Crest the hotel had legendary status in Sydney's hotel scene. Positioned high on Victoria Street above Kings Cross Station, it has spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney's east and features a huge outdoor terrace and four meeting rooms for up to 300 delegates.

Sydney has been suffering from a major room shortage since 2000 — Accor says its Sydney hotels were consistently running between 80 per cent and 90 per cent occupancy throughout 2010.

The new Mercure will effectively provide the first "new" rooms in Sydney since the Ibis King St Wharf opened in 2008.
