Bars turning away 'uncool' patrons face fine

The heat is on for Sydney's trendiest nightclubs and hotels.

Police in Kings Cross, The Rocks, Darling Harbour and the central business district have been ordered to fine licensed premises that refuse entry to people because the doormen or women think they don't look ''cool'' enough.

Officers will be watching venues such as Justin Hemmes' A-list venues Establishment and ivy, and venues including Hugos Lounge and The Club in Kings Cross.

Premises promoted by entrepreneur John Ibrahim such as the Piano Bar and Trademark Hotel, where hundreds queue to enter at weekends, will also be scrutinised.

An edict from Licensing Branch police says all general duties officers must report venues that refuse entry to people by asking them at the door: ''Are you on the guest list?''

Under section 28 of the NSW Liquor Act 2007, only private clubs with registered members can refuse entry to the public.

Pubs and clubs can only knock back patrons if they exceed their registered patron limit, or if a person does not adhere to a dress code or appears too intoxicated, affected by drugs or is aggressive.

Licensed premises can hold private functions in rooms set aside for patrons but the rest of the premises must be open to the public because they are declared ''public houses'' under the act.
