Brintons at Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), located in the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is a unique organisation. Founded in 1838, it is a private club, boasting the largest membership of any sporting club in Australia.

The club's principal role is the management and development of the MCG, one of the largest and the most successful stadiums in Australia. The MCG is one of the country's greatest assets with a magnetism that attracts visitors from all around the globe.

What was the client brief?
Brintons involvement with the MCC dates back to the 1970's when it manufactured and installed a deep red Axminster carpet, woven with the MCC logo, in the clubs' Long Room and dining areas.

In 2003 the MCG embarked on a $430million redevelopment project, part of which was to rebuild the MCC pavilion to create improved facilities for its large member base. The demolition of the historic MCC stand drew enormous community interest. The MCC took the step of auctioning many items from the club, including the 30-year-old Brintons carpet. Individual pieces of carpet were offered for sale, ranging in price form $200 a piece to $500 a linear meter depending on whether it carried the famous MCC logo.

Brintons were commissioned by the MCG redevelopment team to create the carpet for the Long Room, Members Library and Dining Rooms in the new MCC stadium.

Describe the solution that was delivered?
Brintons carpet is again a feature of the new MCC pavilion. Brintons designers worked closely with Darryl Jackson Architects, choosing the historic MCC logo as the hero design element. The logo was combined with a modern linear pattern to create a traditional yet contemporary feeling in the space. Two colour-ways were created, one features navy blue and black with the MCC logo highlighted in regal red. The alternative palette offers a more muted olive, black and navy blue field design bordered in deep royal blue.

What services did Brintons provide during the project?
Brintons manufactured 3,500 sqm of special construction Axminster carpet for the new MCC pavilion. Two different yarns types were combined to add depth and to highlight the exclusive MCC logo.
