A few months ago, the Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort in Sabah opened its luxurious Ocean Wing, a low-slung building with 90 deluxe rooms. The interior design is inspired by the local culture; artwork, carved hardwood partitions, and a natural palette whilst private terraces feature enormous daybeds and outdoor bath (the hotel suggests it’s for two but I’ve seen smaller backyard pools) that overlook the gardens and the South China Sea.

As a unique new wing, the Ocean Wing offers the choicest hospitality experience for discerning travelers who desire privacy and the finest in luxury living. With all opulently furnished rooms facing a sunny wind-swept sea, the Ocean Wing provides is all about exclusivity from the moment guests arrive through an exclusive private gardens and courtyard.

Vertical walls of granite, rocks and bamboo partitions with columns of cascading water create a unique landscape and partitioning which ushers visitors along

a route, opening gradually to reveal an open view of the gardens and pristine beach.

Lush foliage and creative landscaping layout provide utmost privacy in a serene environment at the poolside. Set amidst acres of tropical gardens, the new swimming pool and its surroundings are designed to create an exclusive oasis for guests to revel in.

Each room is beautifully decorated with restful earth colours and natural wood inspired by the ethnic richness of Sabah, and are designed with the highest trappings of luxury and comfort.

At night, Coast restaurant, located on the beach, is transformed by soft blue light from spectacular fixtures that resemble shimmering jellyfish, hanging from the ceiling.

The Ocean Wing’s architect was Mr Chao Tse Ann of Chao Tse Ann and Partners. The interior design was by Mr Lionel Ong of TID Associates Singapore.
