The Bayview Hotel is located in Woy Woy overlooking the beautiful Brisbane Water. The Bayview Brasserie has recently been refurbished by Bergstrom Architects who delivered a rustic architectural interior. The main inspiration was laneway bars, and so recycled timber bar tops and elements of steel were employed to create an intentionally raw and unfinished look.
Working with a heritage building where there are height restrictions and an existing railway tunnel running under the site was only discovered during construction.
The design of the space is based on functionality, operational issues and end-user (customers) needs. With materials, using nature based elements allowed the designers to create a space that is inviting and usable. The colour scheme had to be neutral to be warm and inviting without the distraction of a singular colour.
Tieing the concept together are exposed architectural elements – a brick wall recycled and glazed, exposed steel beams and columns, exposed concrete slab/ceiling, and recycled timber.
Special features include an external curved wall in glazed black bricks. This wall is seen from the gateway entry to Woy Woy. It was originally designed higher but due to heritage listing council has imposed a height restriction. Custom designed sliding gates to bar are intended to secure the bar but the designers did not want to just come up with a roller shutter. Instead they designed sliding gates on an exposed steel beam track supported off the exposed concrete slab.
The hotel has been successful since its opening and are now extending their trading area with a new roof terrace addition with a bar. This is currently under construction.
