For forty years the Broadbeach Bowls Club has sat in the heart of the Gold Coast’s Broadbeach area. Over these years the Club has provided not only an international standard sporting venue, but also a meeting place for the local residents. The Club house had started to look its age and that’s when HHH Architects were asked to help.

Working with the Club’s leadership team, and Condev Construction, they stripped the building back to its floor and roof, exposed its steel frame and removed forty years of salt corrosion, miles of old wiring and everything in between. Even with such extensive works the design cost only half the budget for a new building.

The clubhouse had some great spaces, but overall it was disjointed and cluttered. HHH Architects began by removing an old back bar and toilets, which then opened up the whole building from the entry all the way along the dining hall and looking out to the beach. Now patrons can sit anywhere in the dining hall or on the outdoor terraces, and have panoramic views of the lush lawn bowls greens.

Operationally they have relocated the food servery, and joined the front bar with the sports bar, which now means the Club needs less staff to manage the new commercial kitchen is nearly three times the size of the old kitchen, now allowing the Club to cater for larger functions.

Expansion of the gaming room from thirty machines to nearly fifty will give the Club more secure financial foundations. HHH Architects repositioned the gaming machines to make them more accessible to patrons.

Bare foots bowls is a great fun activity and attracts younger patrons. HHH Architects created a large outdoor terrace area which connects with the greens and allows patrons to enjoy an alfresco drinking and dining experience combined with a game of lawn bowls.

The Club have and will continue to host international events, such as the Australian Open and the World Juniors. The Broadbeach Bowls Club will also be the venue for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls event.

HHH Architects created a new theme throughout which we are calling Coastal Hamptons, combining a mix of greys with white and highlights of bright beach colours such as yellows and blues.

A significate part of the refurbishment was to provide the Club with more inclusive access arrangements throughout the building and around the greens. These facilities will enable the Club to better host their disabled patrons, but also make life it easier for young families.

The refurbishment was a combined effort between the Broadbeach Bowls Club, The City of Gold Coast and the Queensland State Government.

The overall construction budget was $3.5 million.
