design: AN+ID and Round Peg Design

Located in Brisbane’s Albert Lane, Comuna Cantina is the latest design collaboration between AN+ID and Round Peg Design. Built by Tu Projects, Comuna was inspired by Latin American street food culture and the goal was to create a vibrant design that reflected this. Comuna means community in Spanish and the collaborative process allowed for Comuna to be developed from the branding, right through to the completed design. Comuna is the first of its kind to hit the streets of Brisbane and is a destination to bring your friends and family to enjoy the important things in life.

Developing the Comuna brand, focused on bringing a unique and modern dining experience that invokes a sense a passion. It is a new spin on the traditional view of how a South American cantina should look and feel. It incorporates a modern Australian vibe, which can be seen in the visual design of the menu, logo and uniform. This unique fusion tells a vibrant story of celebrating both cultures through food and design.

Highlighting the design is a bold and playful use of the dancing lady emoji in a neon sign with the words ‘But First, We Dance’. This play-on-words was used to create a carnival like vibe that is further accentuated by the bi-folds, which opens up the cantina into the surrounding laneway and adds to the street atmosphere. The Comuna LED neon sign in a soft timber casing also adds to this party atmosphere by replicating an ever-changing disco ball.

Comuna is a totally new dining experience for the people of Brisbane. AN+ID and Round Peg Design produced a fully realised design that celebrates Latin American culture in a modern Australian setting. Comuna is open now, so head down and check it out. Just remember to dance before you eat!
