The corner of George Street and Burnett Lane has been home to the Criterion Hotel since 1885. Though the body of the building has changed from the original, it has remained over the years a popular service provider to its inner city patrons. The owners wanted to extend patronage by attracting a greater mix of people living in, working in and visiting Brisbane City.
The Criterion recently underwent a much needed facelift. Brand and Slater Architects chose to refurbish this iconic site by softening the edges. The space itself was tired and the atmosphere heavy. Construction was broken into two stages. Stage one consisted of an overhaul to the bar, dining, and gaming facilities. Stage two saw the recent completion of the refurbishment project. As requested, all works were undertaken with minimum interruption to trading.
Facilities now cater for lunchtime crowds, for young professionals enjoying drinks and light entertainment after work, and for patrons looking for a stimulating late night atmosphere. The venue provides the perfect escape, nestled below the hustle and bustle of the city. Customers can enjoy the newly refurbished indoor and outdoor dining areas, play a game of pool, liaise with colleagues, or simply relax. Night time plays host to some great live entertainment and DJ sets.
Descending the stairs, the first striking feature is the green marble mosaic weaving its pattern across the entire bar front. The green contrasts agreeably with the warm colours used through the rest of the interior. Strategically placed lighting highlights the green. The marble also spans the back wall of the bar, giving undeniable focus within the space.
Dark timber panels connect the TAB and gaming facilities with the rest of the interior. Dry bars and seating enable patrons to sit, absorb and/ or observe the atmospherics.
A window allows the patron to see out and gives passers-by the opportunity to see in. The space provides a retreat from the busy city streetscape, without removing itself altogether. Finishes are bold, yet refreshingly light creating a design that is both engaging and alluring.
