With its slick, modern interior and stunning outlook over the Nerang River, Helm Bar Surfers is a welcome addition for the local and national functions and events.
Renowned architects Peckvonhartel, the team behind Sydney’s award-winning restaurant Jamie’s Italian, undertook a massive renovation to transform the old Titanium Bar site into Helm Surfers. It now features a sleek, nautical fit-out inspired by its sister venue in Sydney.
Featuring a soaring roof and glass panelling, the sun-drenched venue makes the most the expansive water views. Finished with bold and colourful soft furnishings and quirky trimmings, Helm’s atmosphere is distinctly contemporary. Exposed beams finished with natural fibre ropes and industrial lighting add reflect the nautical theme, while pops of colour and quirky furnishings keep the feel modern and fresh Cutlery served in metal pails, jam jar cocktails and rustic wooden serving platters complete the on-trend feel.
The project started as a low budget purely finishes driven advice project; as such the planning resulted from minimal change to the existing floor plan though addressed issues with the previous plan – maximizing the space to include a decent sized smoking balcony, removing the previous RSA club feel entrance with large sign in desk. The new plan also maximized the dining area space and opened up sight lines to the kitchen as great food and the theatre of food cooking was important to the design and operation of the space.
The nautical spaces were reinforced with materials referenced to sailing within the sports bar – nautical bunting (to reduce reverberant sound), whitewashed decking referenced flooring, aqua touches, Bolon chevron patterned flooring; while the dining side referenced fishing or a fishing hut - rope, submarine blue tongue and groove paneling.
The tiled wall of sails running from entrance to main sports bar ties the concept together. The inexpensive rope screens. are a favourite design solution.
Natural light and surfaces which reflect this creates a space that is welcoming. A move from the dark / chrome / club space previously within the building.
