The main brief for the internal refurbishment of the Mango Hill Tavern was to create a family orientated tavern for all to enjoy, crafted from timeless designs and inspired from the pine forests and terrain in the districts neighbouring Mango Hill.

Internally, the main space is characterised by the ceiling, designed to mimic the undulating landscape the surrounds Mango Hill. An upside down terrain is created from 14,500 hanging battens, or approximately 14kms of local Hoop Pine joined end to end. Custom made barrel pendants extending beyond are wrapped in an in-house forest theme motif that is repeated throughout the venue.

Below this, the space was inspired from stacks of wood found in a timber yard, evident in the bar front assembled from recycled Red Ironbark timber beams. These beams of 300x300mm are stacked and offset to various depths, topped in a glass pane that continues the visual character and design of the bar.

Inside, the taverns space is broken into zones personalised from various finishes, the general dining area and bistro is flexible with booth seating inside and out. Antique dining tables bring character to the room and custom made dry bar tables provide height and divide the room, with a feature made of the pizza oven clad in red gloss tiles.

The brief behind the kids’ area that adjoins the bistro was to set precedence for furthering kids’ areas in pubs and clubs around Queensland. This unsupervised area is broken into zones, catering for varying ages and featuring foam and “talk tubes” that run throughout. A movie zone is cocooned with carpet running up the walls and a puzzle niche provides a play space for younger children.

The restrooms, while out of sight, have been placed in the centre of the Tavern, acting as a divider that breaks up both the gaming and dining rooms.

The sports bar was created on the client brief of a female friendly space, both modem and versatile the finishes and furnishings used are softened in lighter

colours to represent this. A gaming room attached continues the requirements with a ceiling crafted from panels of plasterboard to an atrium effect and back lit with LED lighting that change colour simultaneously affecting the ambience.

Custom designed carpet has been used throughout the tavern inspired from leafs and branches. Used in all rooms across the space, this carpet is characterised with contrasting colour schemes utilising the same design.

Creating a contemporary ambience with classic tones, a colour palette of neutral taupes and browns together with light wood finishes and offset by splashes of red, provides a palette that both softens and warms the entire space.

The Mango Hill Tavern is an impressive example of Prototype’s furniture manufacturing expertise.
Operations Manager, Michael Chippendale, said the company had worked closely with Brand and Slater Architects to deliver the client a striking, yet welcoming atmosphere.

“Under the direction of Brand and Slater, we specially manufactured tub lounge chairs, dining side chairs, banquette seating, bar stools as well as manufacturing eye-catching solid timber batten dry bars designed by renowned architect Luis Nheu.

“Unlike a number of furniture manufacturing companies that are taking their work offshore, we manufacture and finish all products onsite at Prototype’s newly located Murarrie premises,” Mr Chippendale said.

Prototype has the knowledge and capabilities to manufacture all elements of custom-designed furniture from constructing the frames of solid timber, to cutting and sewing the fabric.

Prototype has had 21 years experience in providing furniture to the hospitality industry and in this time has established an impressive track record based on the fit out of clubs, pubs, restaurants and resorts.
