The North Mackay Bowls Club in Mackay has recently completed an extensive and much needed refurbishment. Re-designed by GGI Architects, the transformation has updated the existing Club and created a more open plan space for local patrons to enjoy. The design intent was to expand the existing footprint of the building, opening up the existing Bistro and Bar areas and introducing a new semi-enclosed Gaming Room.

Crystal Donut

Acrylic Donuts with fabric shade and strands of gorgeous ice garlands hung from the center. These were done for Casino RSM, with the largest one measuring 2000mm (6′ 7″) diameter and 400mm (1′ 4″) tall.

Yellowgoat

With its frontage on busy Malcomson St, the venue is exposed to a high volume of passing traffic which was previously under-utilised. GGI Architects re-worked the existing building shell and the Club’s secondary outdoor bowling green to maximize exposure and create a more identifiable and inviting entry point. A new gaming room and reception area has redefined the entry point with bold curving walls, full height glass, a new DOSA, Al Fresco Dining area and new covered walkway. The old bowling green has been converted into a carpark,

combining with the new architectural elements to create movement and activity now visible to passing traffic. At night, the Kezu pendant lights in the reception area are visible from the street, conveying a warm and inviting glow.

The Clubs makeover included an upgrade to the existing Function Rooms, Bistro and Bar and the introduction of a new Café, Children’s Play Room, Gaming Room and Al Fresco Dining area, while maintaining a Bowler’s “Den” for the existing Lawn Bowls patrons. A relaxed and comfortable environment has been created based on a palette of cool greens, purples and pale timbers, with a circular motif recurring in the custom made carpet, light fittings and signage. The
theme of the finishes was born early in the design phase as a point of difference to other hospitality venues in the city.

The North Mackay Bowls Club is situated in a suburban area backing on to the popular Gooseponds waterway. The garden environs of the Gooseponds seemed like a fitting theme to carry through in the Club’s interior, and is also highlighted in names including the “Ponz Café” and the “Golden Goose Gaming Room”. It is also seen in the organic shapes of the curved walls and timber light fittings.

In the Bistro, the eye is drawn to the counter face which has been re-faced in backlit green Marblo. The bar front and café have been faced in a pale timber laminate by Gunnersens, and the wall behind the bar has been re-faced in green glass mosaic tiles by Trend Australia. The Gaming Room features coffered ceilings with large Crystal Donut pendant lights from Yellow Goat.

A venue designed to cater for all demographics, the Club’s renovation has successfully extended the patronage to the Club and caters for a mix of lunchtime, café, dining and Lawn Bowls patrons.
