Parma is set on the corner of the Mirvac redevelopment of the 60’s water board building on Crown Street. The premises had been vacant since the redevelopment. Shawn West of 2D Studio had previously worked with the clients on Parma Cucina & Bar at Sydney University.

The clients brief was for a casual Italian restaurant and bar that had a relaxed funky atmosphere, avoided all the usual clichés and would fit into the competitive Surry Hills restaurant precinct. Spread over two levels, with a bar and dining area on the ground floor with an open kitchen, dining area and toilets upstairs.

The material palette varies from metallic to textured surfaces. The entry level is dominated by the custom wall graphic depicting a New York street scene. The large bar is separated into two areas with the eating area clad in hand made Moroccan terracotta laid on the herringbone and timber eating bench. The service side is finished in retro copper dome tiles and stone top. The ceiling level over the bar was lowered and finished in a Porters metallic paint finish.

Polished concrete floors contrast against the painted bagged brickwork walls and custom circle wallpaper. Seating areas wrap around the windows with Marrimekko cushions and banquette seating. Food produce stacked on shelves and along window areas and aged pizza boards to walls further enhance the food feel.

A timber staircase with copper clad walls and custom wallpaper reveal the upper level.

The smaller dining area with timber floors, lower ceiling levels and full wall custom graphic depicting a café scene. Banquette seating wraps around the upper level windows finished in custom designed fabric. The open kitchen is clad in the Moroccan terracotta and shelving filled with produce to make your feel part of the cooking area.

The restaurant occupies a corner position with large windows, so at night, the two oversized wall graphics and bar areas along with the open kitchen create a visual feast.
