The concept behind the 280sqm refurbishment of the Premier’s Lounge Bar, located in Brisbane’s Treasury Casino, was to create a space reflecting a key period in Queensland history which involved notoriety of the (then) Premier, underground bar and entertainment activities, development and demolition, public opinion and action. The bar comprises four distinct rooms - lounge, dance floor, cabinet room (table + seating) and wine bar - each with a different style and presence. The wine bar, which can be used as a stand alone venue, is nestled in the corner of the building looking out to the river Victoria Bridge, and then across to Queen Street’s Brisbane Square.

Premiers Bar was an incredibly challenging bar refurbishment in a strictly controlled heritage listed

building. The establishment maintained the name though relaunched a new venue. The space was very
cellular as a series of rooms. Due to heritage restrictions, Hassell were unable to remove walls or install suspended ceilings – limiting their options with lighting and acoustic treatments.

The design concept grew out of inspiration of a former and notorious premier of Queensland – Joh Bjelke-Petersen and the era in which he presided – rooms were given their own identity and personality and linked under the governing umbrella of ‘Premiers Bar’, though they were very distinct in their offer – lounge, dance, casual drink - in and out door bars and luxury wine bar, with a private room.
