An acute understanding of Adam Cullen’s aesthetic has been a key element in the development of the interiors at The Cullen boutique hotel. The Cullen is focused on the works of the iconic Australian artist, which are featured throughout the hotel across the six storeys and 115 rooms.

A team of experienced interior designers and architects have been working on the project for well over a year, creating striking interiors which highlight the energy and vibrance of Adam Cullen’s work. Over 450 pieces of Cullen’s artwork will be featured throughout the hotel in all common areas and rooms, giving guests a chance to immerse themselves in his work.

Taking pride of place in the foyer of The Cullen are two life-sized fibreglass cows painted by Cullen and a series of original works, created specially for the area. Each room will feature a minimum of two individually-lit Cullen works, acting as the central focal point for the room.

The monochromatic colour scheme has been designed to allow the bright colours of Cullen’s work to stand-out, with black, grey and white featuring throughout the rooms and public areas. Highlight colours like red and orange have been used with wall colours and soft furnishings, the perfect backdrop for Cullen’s work.

Each room has been curated with designer furniture and soft furnishings from premium quality fabrics. Taking inspiration from the best modern-day designers, the furniture is a reflection of the most iconic pieces of our time including ghost chairs and tulip tables. Funky feature lamps and bright throw cushions with contrast stitching complement the scheme, with designer bookshelves showcasing a collection of art and design titles.

The living area features a kitchenette with top-of-the-range stainless steel appliances with cooktop, microwave oven and dishwasher. Lounge areas, work stations and dining spaces are incorporated into the rooms in various combinations offering guests the ultimate in space. Polished chrome fittings and frosted glass with an Adam Cullen watermark create a sense of luxury in the bathroom with custom towel rails and fittings.

The Cullen Hotel is the first in a series of luxury art-focused hotels to open over the next 18 months in Melbourne. Developed by Will Deague and the Art Series Hotel Group, each will focus on an iconic Australian artist and their work. The flagship for the group, The Olsen, named for Australia’s greatest living painter John Olsen will open in February 2010 followed by The Blackman in June 2010.
