The Deck Restaurant is located at Southgate with stunning views of the Melbourne city skyline. The original Deck Restaurant was located on mid-level and operated there successfully for several years before relocating to the upper level to take advantage of city views and proximity to the Melbourne Arts Centre.

The brief was to create a space that was open and transparent and was able to be transformed according to the time of day and type of functions on offer.

Eon Design’s concept was driven by the spatial constraints of the tenancy and its unique layout. It was through this uniqueness that they were able to explore the ideas of an open boundary and the flexibility of an adjustable space.

The venue incorporates a full commercial kitchen with patisserie, a front bar counter with wine store and a charcuterie display. The unique layout of the space offers a variety of eating and drinking options from pre-theatre drinks and sharing plates at the bar to a more formal dining experience in the intimate dining room or out on the deck.

Some interesting design elements include the innovative shopfront design which is made up of six large sliding mesh panels that can be spaced

along the entire length of the shopfront or stacked behind each other depending on what configuration is required. The transparent quality of the woven wire mesh articulates the panels and provides depth to the interior which enables the shopfront to read as an unobtrusive boundary.
