The Villager opened in November 2010 and has added a welcome new offering in casual dining and late night lounging to Brisbane’s hospitality landscape. The Gastro Bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week and also incorporates a street-fronting espresso bar, fuelling George Street commuters with their daily caffeine hit and light bites.

The concept and features for this interior were drawn from the beautiful and authentic heritage brick wall, which had to be stripped back. The Villager has three distinct areas: the ground and mezzanine floors with their industrial yet opulent and contemporary, laid back look and the ‘Supper Club’ in the top floor (open from 9pm – 3am) with a more sophisticated ‘Gentlemen’s smoking room’ feel.

The ground and mezzanine floors boast an unusual harmony between the heavy industrial exposed steel beams (painted over using Porter’s paints ‘Rust’ specialist paint) and the bright colours and opulent feel of the Mokum fabrics used throughout.

In keeping with the industrial feel of the existing brick wall, Inaspace Architects sourced vintage industrial ‘Factory’ pendant lights to hang down the void above the entrance, becoming the centrepiece of this space. Quirky yellow glazed mosaic tiles adorn the bar front.

The Supper Club boasts a sophisticated look with second-hand chesterfield armchairs and couches. Inaspace Architects reflected the architectural vernacular of the existing walls with its intrinsic and detailed plasterwork by using warm lighting, and opulent finishes, as well as creating a sense of whimsy through the use of wallpaper and objects such as the majestic mounted stag head. The bar, with its white marble front and LED lit shelving becomes the focal point of this room.

“The Gastro Bar represents a novel take on traditional bar dining with a homely offering of classic comfort food with a modern twist, as well as an inventive cocktail menu and extensive beer and wine selection.

Like the city it calls home, The Villager is clearly a mixed bag.  It’s a community of character and a hotchpotch of style and design where nothing really matches but where everything seems to fit.  A welcome addition to the Brisbane hospitality landscape.”
