The iconic Unity Hall has undergone a major transformation with the opening of The Workers, the latest project completed within the precinct. Set in Sydney’s former blue collar district of Balmain, the new look is said to be a respectful nod to the venue’s rich connection with the labour party, taking on the cheeky and eclectic persona of yesteryear.

Refurbished by The Riversdale Group, the client worked with Prototype Commercial Furniture to bring together a space that was full of character and playfulness, with a little bit of cheek.

The project started from the ground up, with Riversdale selecting the tartan carpet used throughout the venue to set the playful tone. Prototype’s production team then worked in colourful, eclectic and miss-matched furniture items to complement the large scale wall graphics and modern portraits of labour party greats such as Bob Hawke.

With multiple meeting, function and eating rooms, each space has been given its own personality with a mix of reclaimed and customised furnishings to set the mood. Detailed upholstery and fabrication work emulate the venue’s rich history with a mix of aged-leather Chesterfield lounges, heavy timber turned tables and customised chairs and ottomans with antique stud work.

CEO of Riversdale Group, Paddy Couglan, said that working with Prototype allowed them to reclaim tired pieces to work for the new look and are vital to The Workers heritage.

Almost every piece of furniture has been made-to-fit, to ultimately contradict and compliment at the same time. The numerous feature chairs scattered in the main bar area have been soucred locally and internationally with some items given a facelift of tupac painted frames in bold colours and upholstered in bright vinyls and velvet to suit the space.

Leading off the main bar is a quirky rooftop beer garden that features outdoor tables and chairs from European brand; EMU. Built-in timber bench seating, customised marble tables and bright orange stools also complement the outdoor space which is framed by graffiti clad and raw brick walls.
