Evocative of place, 12-Micron draws on the colours, tones and textures of a Spotted gum. Exploring a uniquely Sydney interior from stone floors to floating clouds and bark like leathers.

Beautifully realised, subtle and elegantly luxurious with careful planning to allow everyone, including staff, spectacular harbour views.

As part of the Barangaroo foreshore it was essential that a Sydney aesthetic be developed to harmonise, but not compete, with the harbour views. Drawing on Sydney’s native flora and urban context, the combination of a grid pattern overlay is contrasted with the natural texture of eucalyptus.

Additionally, the design references the indoor/outdoor lifestyle of Sydney with exterior finishes, such as stone cobbles, used indoors. To this end, tiles and cobbles in green grey, blur boundary lines with floor details wrapping up the walls.

Spotted gum has been used extensively for rich tonal nuance, while plums, greens and blues evoke the colours of a gum leaf. A rough bark texture has been introduced through leathered finished granite and loose fit leather sofas and banquets with ruffled detailing.

JSB Lighting and Red Square were approached by lighting designers, Electrolight, to develop a custom solution for illuminating the unique space at 12 Micron.  The challenge was to highlight the vaulted ceilings as well as providing lighting to the space below simultaneously.  The average width of each vault was approximately 2m, so the lighting solution needed to span that distance and bring wiring to the light source as well as fix discretely to the edges of the ceiling vaults.

The lighting designers were after a narrow spot downlight to create an intimate ambiance within the space, but a wide uplight for the vaults.  The down and uplighting were to be controlled independently via DALI protocols.  The solution was a custom built spotlight using the Xicato XIM module which has integral DALI capabilities, a variation of Red Square’s Spot 60 and 105.  Heat dissipation was built in to the fitting incorporating the rod as well to ensure the Xicato module performed to it’s optimum capacity.  The dual colouring of the fitting also presented a challenge which was resolved via a two step process – the tube was first anodised in black and the entire construction was powder coated white.
