Big Screen Video at Flinders University

The ability to use technology to change the landscape of university campuses is becoming increasingly possible. We’re seeing universities constantly adapt and change to a technological environment. In South Australia we can see continuous renovation and movement through our university campuses, each in their own unique way.

While these South Australian universities are vastly different in so many ways, they have all put tremendous work into creating inviting and inspiring spaces that seek to keep students on site to utilise facilities to the best of their ability.

Big Screen Video have been inspired by the opportunities they’ve had to work with the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, incorporating massive feature screens into their infrastructure.

As an intrinsic part of Flinders University’s recent plaza developments, a 6.5m wide x 3m high LED screen was installed.

The newly launched student hub has transformed the dynamic of such a central part of Flinders University, opening new avenues and an ever changing landscape for student entertainment and events.

Project Director of the Plaza and Student Hub, John Dyson explains how essential the LED screen was to bring this Plaza, bustling town square environment to light.

“The provision of an integrated super screen and sound system was seen as intrinsic to both a modern town square and a recreational events destination. The provision of the screen was not considered in isolation, rather it was always going to be needed to realise the project vision and master plan concept.

The support from Big Screen Video in facilitating early installation and temporary operation of the screen 3 months ahead of project completion was instrumental in successfully showcasing the University.

The University has already held a concert for 2,500 people featuring a Triple J Hottest 100 winning band, movie nights, official university celebrations, live sport and digital marketing.” Dyson Says.

Installation of University of Adelaide’s feature screen was completed early this year. At 4.5m wide x 2.5m high in high resolution, this indoor LED screen makes for an unmissable feature in their student hub area. Ian Thompson, Manager of Hub Central & Ask Adelaide at Adelaide University explains why they decided to purchase a big screen and how it serves the space:

“A big screen had often been requested by students and the wider University community, as it gives us the chance to link the screen content with the activities that occur around the campus.

The big screen now provides us with the opportunity to simulcast Graduations and other events that have limited capacity, and we will use it as a promotional screen with important messages to students.

We selected Big Screen Video because they are South Australia’s largest screen provider and they came with a strong reputation for quality in both screens and after-sales service.

The screen has already been a popular attraction for students who have seen photos of themselves in O’Week and as a promotional billboard for upcoming events. “ Thompson says.

General Manager and Director of Big Screen Video, Brett Delaney is thrilled to see these screens come to light.

“We are so excited to see LED feature in such new and different ways, bringing people together and activating spaces. We would love to be involved in helping universities nationally to unlock these opportunities in areas where students congregate.” Delaney says.
