Having been in the hands of the historically and culturally significant Roe family since the 1840s, Mandoon Estate was purchased in 2008 by the current owners who have the dual vision of preserving the history of the unique site and merging this with their own story to create a quality winery and microbrewery fast becoming an iconic landmark within its own right and further consolidating the Swan Valley as a premium wine producing region.

Melding five areas boasting differing uses and ambience’s, each individual space is considered a single venue as well as part of a greater entity. The final result is an overall space that is layered, multi-faceted, has depth of character, and ultimately has the capacity to offer patrons a different experience each time they visit.

The overall interior was achieved through a strong design vision centred on synergy between the built and natural environments; maintaining subtle references to the overarching design concept within each individual space; and combining contemporary design elements with authentic, timeless finishes.

The wine tasting area forms the soul of the venue. The space is neutral and calming with a restrained colour palette and inspiration from the beauty and subtleties in the natural external colour palette. This space provides the perfect segue as patrons transition between the outside environment and the multiple interior spaces beyond.

The darkness of the underground wine store is accentuated to create a unique dining space that cultivates a sense of exclusivity and occasion. The industrial machinery used on a vineyard is referenced through the use of indigo and cobalt blues with mixed metals, adding intensity and a masculine edge to the space.

Fibrous layered textures, geometric shapes and repetitive elements reinterpret and enhance the patterns occurring naturally in the vines and leaves immediately adjacent to the interior of the Tavern. The orange, pindan and rust accents inspired by the red clay foundations present on the construction site serve to strengthen the internal/external connection. Simultaneously, punchy accents of black and silver act to separate the tavern from the outdoor environment, creating a ‘viewing box’ effect. The internal colour palette has been selected to complement and enhance the diversity of greens present in the vineyards the space overlooks. The two aspects are designed to work together, yet each has the strength to stand alone in its own right.

The restaurant has a discerning palette of neutral colours in varying tones interjected with gold accents. This space plays on the refraction of light and its ability to amplify colours and elements in nature. The restaurant interior embodies the complexity and illusiveness created when two elements of nature combine in an instant to create the remarkable, unique and treasured.

Mandoon Estate embraces the relationship between humans and nature symbolised by the creation of wine – enhancing a natural product through human intervention and craftsmanship. It engages the senses, draws people together and creates an unrivalled hospitality venue in the Swan Valley.
