Bates Smart’s design for the Mayfair Hotel in Adelaide proudly reinstates the glamour of travel to a grand historic building.

Housed within the 1930’s Colonial Mutual Life building, Bates Smart felt that the structure’s heritage should be respected and acknowledged. The interior design concept was to infuse 1930’s charm and to reinstate architectural order into the new, contemporary 170 room hotel.

Chevron patterning from the external façade has been referenced in the interior joinery detailing, and metalwork from the original windows has been reflected throughout the steel balustrades and glazed partitions to the new triple-height atrium space.

Bates Smart worked with local architect JPE Design Studio to create a handsome ribbon stair of black steel which spirals through the atrium void.

At the top of the building, Bates Smart have created an extraordinary and luxurious executive lounge with exposed timber roof structure and ambience of a sophisticated club lounge. Rich golden tones are layered throughout from the timber flooring; shimmering bronze mesh screens, leather upholstery and textiles are contrasted with the cool tones of handmade glazed and cement patterned tiles, rough-textured walls and the white marble of the central bar.

Elegant full height dark timber panelling is contrasted against fresh bright stone flooring and counter tops and crisp polished plaster columns and white ceilings.
