On the beautiful beachside strip of Black Rock, this all-in-one restaurant, bar, function venue and micro-brewery is an impressive and attractive venue.

Projects of Imagination has designed a building which successfully service the needs of a micro brewery whilst designing an interior which encompass breakfast, lunch and evening dining whilst also attracting an alcohol beverage trade.

The client’s motivation was that there is very little hospitality within the local area which offers an experience outside of pokie machine venues and counter meal pubs. The client felt there was an extensive opportunity to create a venue which would elevate the standard of food and beverage within the area.

The client wanted an interior which was relatively understated utilising robust and historic materials (semi-industrial). The interior feels open and connected to the exterior, and ultimately appeals to a broad audience of clientele.

The original facade was maintained with slight modifications to the ground and first level.

Projects of Imagination introduced a second internal facade to help overcome the wind issues whilst offering a semi segregated area for casual breakfast and or drinking trade. The two new openings to either side of the entrance help connect with the sidewalk whilst harnessing the view.

Projects of Imagination decided the brewery should be partially open to the main dining / drinking area but not impact or dominate the interior as they felt it would reduce the opportunity for a successful breakfast and coffee trade. The stairwell helps to act as the screening device.

The material palette was kept to a simple combination of brick faces (glazed and unglazed), lining boards, concrete and timber.

The interior has two entrances; from the beach front and from the laneway to the rear. For this reason Projects of Imagination wanted the brewery to be ‘on show’ for the customers who would enter from the rear.

The columns and bar facade are clad in a raw snap brick face with feature glazed brick faces introducing lines of varying colours.

A concrete exposed aggregate bar top is lit by the overhead industrial pendant lights. Blackbutt Timber banquettes and solid timber tops are accompanied by Eames black sidechairs.

Exposed edison pendant lights are located above the internal planter boxes.  The ceiling is made up of exposed expanded high joist with cross bracing. The ceiling height was an important factor therefore to maximise the internal height the air ducts and electrical cable trays are exposed throughout the interior.

The first level services small private functions. This area was maintained to a very simple palette creating a backdrop which would service the needs of various functions. The ceiling continues with a similar expression to downstairs exposed expanding high joists, the floor is polished concrete with minor level of exposed aggregate, whilst the walls are a continuation of the white painted lining boards. Clusters of exposed Edison globe pendant lights help provide a subtle break within the space.

The bar is miniature version of the main bar.

The system brief was for playback of recorded music throughout the property with facilities for Microphones and Vision in the first floor Bar/Function Space. Systems needed to be incorporated into the décor. A total of four zones needed to be addressed: ground floor bar / dining and terrace as well as the first floor bar/function space and also balcony.

“The control system used was by Bose as the user interface is friendly and sonically gave us every element of gates, compression and Eq we needed,” said Richard Hallam, managing director of YSI. “The proposed wall control panels are very attractive and suit the décor well.”

Three stereo input points are provided throughout the property to allow for varying music programs to different locations, particularly with regard to functions being held.

Two wall mounted controls are placed behind each Bar, both ground and first Floor. This allows for noise level and program changes in the spaces being addressed easily and quickly.

The main loudspeaker systems on both floors are by Turbosound (sixteen mid/high’s, four sub bass) and all of the eight outdoor loudspeakers are Quest. These were chosen for their weather retardant construction as they face the sea!

The first floor toilets were fitted with Australian Monitor QF8’s. Australian monitor amplifiers were used throughout.

The aesthetic design of the property required a very clean look, particularly with regards to the fact that almost every wall / ceiling / surface in the property was white. Subsequently all loudspeakers and control panels needed to be available in white.

The end result gives a big warm sound capable of dealing with lots of people making noise enjoying themselves. It is a colour matched system that gives the customer flexibility to meet most audio requirements.
