Designer Rugs’ new Romance Was Born collection is fantastical, visionary and not for the faint at heart. Fashion label Romance Was Born is synonymous with the words creativity and collaboration, and is the most recent design house to partner with Designer Rugs for another celebrated collection.
Unleashing its wondrous imagery, kaleidoscopic colours and chimerical style, Romance Was Born has created a fanciful and visionary collection of rugs. Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales founded Romance Was Born in 2005 and quickly became known for their exceptional design acumen and storytelling vision. Winning the Woolmark Designer Award in 2008 and Qantas Spirit of Youth Award in 2009, they have garnered worldwide acclaim for their theatrical runway shows and extravagant garments worn by Cate Blanchett, Daphne Guinness, Sia, Lady Gaga, Catherine Martin, Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. Plunkett and Sales’ approach, much like Designer Rugs, has a strong relationship between art and design as they seek to provoke an emotional response and tell a story through their craft Plunkett and Sales looked to the Romance Was Born archives for inspiration for their Designer Rugs collection.
“We wanted to make something that really represents who we are as a brand,” Sales says. “We talked about the type of rug we would like in our homes and we have always thought there is so much in our archive that would lend itself to a life outside of fashion”.
Certainly the four rugs in the Romance Was Born collection are as vibrant and imaginative as the rest of their work.
“The rugs are showstoppers, and like an artwork will create wonderful centrepieces,” says Lia Pielli, Senior Designer at Designer Rugs. “They would be equally at home in an eclectic interior, with layers of pattern, finishes and colour, or a minimalist space where the designs can sing.”
