Pino Espresso Bar is set within the redevelopment of the Valiant office furniture building in Waterloo. The café is positioned on a prominent corner of Danks & Bourke St. Shawn West of 2D Studio had previously worked with the clients on Bar Pistevo at Neutral Bay, so heknew what they wanted.

The space is basically a wedge shape with glazing on all sides except one wall, so it was challenging to have a small prep kitchen, serving area and seating space whilst also creating a statement. The idea was to use simple strong forms that worked with the existing angles and with texture to diffuse the hard lines of glass and concrete.

A full height wall of copper panels in various sizes was used to hide the kitchen area and provide a stunning backdrop. During different times of the day the light creates a soft glow on the copper. A combination of solid blackbutt countertops with retro 70’s Spanish tiles and recycled timber floors further soften and add texture.

The space is bathed in natural light so track lighting was kept minimal. Hand blown glass pendants over the sit down counter area and the community table break up the space.

The community table is finished in hand made tiles.
