Brand + Slater have been involved in the design of the new Orion Hotel within the city of Springfield since it was conceived some three years ago. The Orion Hotel is the anchor point of the new extension to Orion Shopping Complex at Springfield Central. Brand + Slater Director, Luis Nheu said, “Springfield is a rapidly growing community and the client sought to make Orion Hotel ‘the local’ for surrounding residents”.
Accordingly, the design for the Orion Hotel takes advantage of the mild Queensland climate. As a venue it is predicated around maximising outdoor spaces and creating interiors that incorporate an indoor/outdoor experience. Dining is extended with gaming and function areas, sports bar and, intrinsic to the design, are outdoor areas that open to the terraced amphitheatre and a children’s play zone.
The hotel is conceptualised as a place to engage families and young people who comprise much of the Springfield population. This arrival point between the ‘end of the line’ railway station and the shopping centre is a community hub, offering facilities where the indoor segues with generous outdoor areas.
Nheu noted, “The challenge when planning the hotel was prioritising families whilst respecting other demographics – those clients who use the gaming and the sports bar. The floor plan ultimately arranged the function, dining and gaming areas to accommodate all parties who use the venue without disruption or inconvenience of the other.”An open and welcoming verandah with tiered seating allows for all ages to gather overlooking this new city precinct. Cascading doors slide away to unite the indoor and outdoor dining. The entertainment terrace features high ceilings, a bar, entertainment stage and an amphitheatre created with terraced concrete steps. Exterior lighting and the amphitheatre create an inviting entry.
The terrace bar features a monolithic concrete design, the greenery a feature of the steel framed shelves behind. Soft yet focused lighting makes for an ambient area to gather and share.
Lively interiors are particularly detailed in the dining and function areas. In the dining area natural and colourful finishes have a youthful aesthetic including a custom designed mural graphic along the back wall. Timber paneling on the walls, mirror and stone tiles create a dining area that is clean, fresh, a little funky and family oriented. Feature timber beams in a random crossing pattern, with lighting from ceiling coffers and various pendants define zones within the venue.
More intimate interior spaces within the gaming room have been created with dark tones for carpet, wallpaper and ceiling finishes. High raked ceilings feature a timber truss design, and the function area may be extended as an additional dining area. The sports bar has a distinctive aesthetic: facing to the outdoors with full height glazing, and incorporating all weather pool tables, it is differentiated by its hint of nostalgia with a concrete bar and steel-framed display shelves which house reclaimed knickknacks.
Brand + Slater’s design of Orion Hotel has developed the versatile spaces required for this expenading community’s breadth of interests with verve and flair.
